On 11 January, Espersen and partners received the Responsible Business Oceans Award 2017 for an international agreement to protect the marine environment in the Northeast Atlantic.

“On behalf of the industry group I would like to express our pride in receiving this recognition for our long-term commitment to protecting the vulnerable marine environment in the Northern Barents Sea. From fishing fleets and unions to fish processors and retailers in Russia, Norway, UK and Denmark, we have worked side by side to agree on the self-imposed, precautionary ban on cod fishing in the area”, says Alex Olsen.

The protected area covers the Barents seas around and north of the islands of Svalbard in Norway. This part of the ocean is becoming ice-free due to climate changes, opening up new possibilities for fishing.

“At Espersen, we take an active role in protecting the marine environment and its cod stock in the Norwegian and Barents Seas. The richness of the seas has potential to feed the ever-growing population of the planet. We have to think long-term and ensure that next generations can also enjoy seafood”, says Alex Olsen.
