This quote from our recently published 2019 Sustainability Report nicely describes our sustainability work. As in previous years the report is structured into four sections:
- Promote sustainable fishing – which is how we conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources
- Maintain supply chain integrity – how we secure traceable supply of delicious seafood
- Minimize resource use – how we save on water and energy and get the most out of the fish
- Ensure good worker welfare – what we do to provide a good and safe workplace
In the introduction to this report Klaus Nielsen our CEO has highlighted that addressing climate change is a key business focus for Espersen. A recent UN FAO report has predicted that climate change will lead to significant changes in the availability of fish stocks across the oceans. Studies have also indicated that stocks of some fish species (such as Atlantic cod) are moving into new areas, while others (e.g. polar cod) will abandon their current locations." At Espersen, we feel these changes in our personal mindset and behavior, and it impacts our business. However, crucially we believe that it is not too late to make a change, and that the time to act is now.” You can read about our climate action plan in the report.
A few highlights from the 2019 report:
➡ 93% of all sourced fish is from GSSI recognized Seafood Certification Schemes such as MSC or ASC.
➡ At Director, Senior Manager and Manager level 50% are women.
➡ Total energy & water use decreased despite 6.6% increase in production.
➡ In 2019 our food waste accounted for 1.7 tons.
